GENDER STEREOTYPES

Hi guys welcome to my blog this is my first post unlike the other one..lol. I want to talk about gender stereotypes.

Gender stereotypes are extremely common in the society, one of the reasons may simply be because it is easier on the brain to stereotpye. Gender stereotypes are generalizations about the roles of each gender. These are generally neither positive nor negative. They are simply inaccurate generalizations of male and female attributes. Gender stereotypes are dangerous because they might create unequal or unfair treatment to a certain person who chooses to defy people's assumptions about his or her gender. While most people realize that stereotypes are untrue, many still make assumptions based on gender one of such stereotypes is assuming that all women want to marry and have children or that all men love football. Have you ever watch a little girl playing in her doll house, as young as five or six she is aware that she is suppose to stay at home not go to work and cook dinner for her husband while he returns. In Nigeria too when we play our drama as kids the girls make paper or wrapper baby and care for them, we cook sand food(lol) while the boys go to work and come back to meet food. Its so common that from a little age children now think like that.

There are million gender stereotypes about the male and female gender but that pertaining to females are more sometimes I wonder why (but why na ehn? )
Some stereotypes for male are: men are doctors not nurses , men do dirty jobs , men are responsible for providing money in the family, men do not cook, men enjoy sports and must watch football, men enjoy working on cars  and so on
Some stereotypes for females are: women are suppose to have clean jobs like teaching, women can't be politicians ,women don't need to go to college or university ,women are not strong as men , women do not flirt, women are never in charge, women must stay at home and cook and the list goes on. These stereotypes may be your true personality but it does not apply to every man or woman. The facts that these things are considered normal is what makes them stereotypes.

When it comes to gender stereotypes in popular media. "Masculine" cultures are those that emphasize achievement, assertiveness and material rewards while "Feminine" culture are those that emphasize cooperation, modesty and caring for the weak. In general women are more likely to be sexualized than men. They are more like to wear seductive clothes, they are more often attractive than men in magazine covers, billboards, advertisement and they are more likely to be objectified.

Apart from gender stereotypes, people can be stereotyped because of the country they are from , for example Nigeria is stereotyped to be a bad and corruptive country and Nigerians are also stereotyped to be bad although there are some positive stereotypes about the Nigerian people like: Nigerians are creative , very religious , business oriented, love to enjoy life ( YOLO ofcourse jare) , very smart , dress tribally and their favorite food is EBA ( ha yes it is indeed). But also there are negative stereotypes about Nigerian people alot more than you can imagine, some of them are: Nigerians are internet scam artist (yahoo yahoo..) , identify theft among low class people, black magic, voodoo, prostitution (runs) , robbery, bribery , jungle justice, corrupt government , tribalism, mostly dark skinned if you are fair that means you bleached hehehe, they always shout when talking , always speak pidgin , they are uneducated ( I disagree on this one because the average Nigerian family wants every member of the family to go to school, but jamb or waec will not allow people to go..lol) and the list goes on but why ? Not all Nigerians involved in this Biko we are not theives, or uneducated why all these stereotypes.

Gender stereotypes can be so powerful that they bias people's memories of their own past performances. Our gender is only part of who we are it does not define us as a people .
